Chapter 6

Matt

Ipulled over by the front of his house, the nanny that was taking care of him rushing out through the front door. Seeing her like that made my heart skip a beat. She was wearing an apron. It was obvious she’d been cooking something for the two of them. Whatever happened, it appeared to be serious. And with her running out of their house like that, concern twisting the skin of her face, then it had to be a matter too serious to be ignored. For sure, it involved Cody.

And if that were the case, I needed to do something about it before he was put in danger.

During these last few days, Cody and I had been talking. I’d been talking with his babysitter too, and she was a good woman, all things considered. She was super-protective of him, and that was something that annoyed the hell out of him.

I’d made up his mind to take it easy with her. He said he’d been making some progress on that, and it seemed he hadn’t lied. She would never, ever be bolting out of their home to meet me like this if she still didn’t like him much, like it was back on her first day here. That happened no more than a couple of days ago, but I already felt the opposite was the case.

I jumped out of my pickup, pushing the door until it was closed. The babysitter halted in front of me all of sudden, doing her best to make sure she wouldn’t lose her balance and fall over face-first on the pavement.

It was snowing still, but the town hall was doing some good work with salting the snow and plowing the rest.

The nanny was wringing her hands, her mouth contorting itself as a ray of worry coated her eyes.

Seeing her like this, all I could think was that I needed to know what was getting her so concerned. I didn’t know her well, but there was no way I was going to let her all on her own like this. She needed someone taking care of her now, too.

And, where was Cody again? He always came out rushing every time I pulled over. We hadn’t been seeing each other again that long yet, but he already knew what the engine of my pickup truck sounded like.

“Is something wrong?” I asked, not trying to sound worried, but the crack of my voice betrayed me. When it came to Cody, things always got more complicated.

“It’s Cody. He just ran out of the house. There was this other young man here… I don’t know his name, but he broke into the house-”

“Wait, he broke into the house?”

She nodded, continuing, “He broke in, stole something from Cody, and then he ran after him. I pleaded with him not to chase him, but he just wouldn’t listen. Before I knew it, he was already chasing the other young man into the woods. I don’t know what’s really happening here, but I’m worried, Mr.
